Spice up your life: Crispy Cauliflower Wings

Spice up your life: Crispy Cauliflower Wings

Go to any sports bar and the options for vegan & gluten free people are slim to none. A few years ago, bars started expanding their menu. I began seeing most places have fried pickles, tots, or cauliflower wings. These quickly became my go to yet each time I ate them, the next day I would feel sick and could not understand why.

Most of these fried options are buttermilk batter or beer batter. Both of which are high in gluten, dairy, and eggs. All which leave me with a severe pain in my stomach.

In moments like this, I feel inspired to find ways to “nourish” recipes so that I can continue eating things I love in a healthier, no tummy ache way. This is what lead me to creating a vegan & gf batter so that I could make my own cauliflower wings at home.

For the BBQ sauce, next time I am going to use a General TSO’s sauce as I prefer it over BBQ. Sometimes BBQ sauce can taste a bit to “gamey” to me. You can sub out the BBQ for any sauce you’d like to follow the recipe & get the same result.

Spice up your life: Crispy Cauliflower Wings

Serves: 1 head of cauliflower

  • 1 cup Trader Joe’s gluten free flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 2 tbsp onion powder
  • 1 head of cauliflower, broken up into florets
  • 1-2 cups bbq sauce or General TSO’s
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 green onions, chopped
  • 1 tbsp Trader Joe’s everything seasoning
  • sesame seeds (optional)

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 450F. In a large mixing bowl, add the GF flour, water, garlic & onion powder, salt & pepper. Whisk vigorously until you have a smooth texture. Add the cauliflower florets to the mixture and stir until all florets are evenly coated.
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper then transfer the cauliflower florets to the baking sheet, spacing them out as if you were baking cookies.
  3. Place the cauliflower in the oven for about 20 minutes. Once done, let cauliflower cool slightly. Mix olive oil & BBQ sauce in a mixing bowl then add the baked cauliflower florets to the same bowl. Mix until cauliflower is evenly coated with BBQ sauce. Place the cauliflower florets back on the baking sheet, spacing them out again, then place back in oven for another 20 minutes.
  4. Remove from oven once done and cauliflower florets are crispy. Let cool then brush with more BBQ sauce if needed. Place florets on a serving plate then add chopped green onions, everything seasoning, and sesame seeds. Ready to serve!
