Weekend Get Away: Jalama Beach, CA
I have another trip to add to your bucket list, trust me, you will be thanking me later. Jalama Beach is a breathtaking campsite directly on the sand with panoramic views of the central coast. The entire time I felt like I was literally living out of my favorite TV show “Big Little Lies” (without the murder part), it also may have helped we had the soundtrack on repeat all weekend. The golden hills, fresh air, surf right in front of you, and dogs everywhere were just some of the many reasons I fell in love with this place. Each campsite holds a max of 8 people and two cars. For bigger groups get 2 sites right next to each other (66 & 67 are the best). For amenities, there are bathrooms, showers and a store complete with a restaurant that’s home to the famous Jalama Burger. You will want this for dinner every night, the sauce is SO good AND they have veggie patties (I was one happy camper, literally).
Jalama itself is located a little north of Santa Barbara, CA. I highly recommend stopping in SB to get lunch on the way home. We ate at Boathouse at Hendry’s Beach, a restaurant right on the water. It was so delicious and they have happy hours on Sunday (get the blood orange marg if you know what’s good for you).As far as what to do at the campsite, there is surf directly in front of you. The water is pretty chilly so make sure you bring your wetsuit! The night time can get windy so a flannel and a beanie will be your best friend. The best part is the secluded beach. The only inhabitants are the other campers and their furry friends. We poured wine in red cups and went on a sunset stroll followed with the cliché campfire stories and roasting smores all night. If you are looking for an inexpensive weekend with friends, Jalama is the destination. Make sure you reserve a spot in advance because they do fill up quickly! I can’t wait to go visit this little slice of heaven again, but I will dream of that gorgeous central coast beach till I return.
P.s There is no cell reception so make sure you communicate with your group ahead of time the plans.
