Weekend Get Away: K38, Mexico

The travel bug has stuck again! I have decided to add a new segment on my blog called “weekend get aways”. What is that you might ask (or might not ask)? A weekend get away, simply put, is a trip usually consisting of two nights and three days. Enough time to make you feel like you literally “got away” and did not have to confront the boss man/woman to have that horrid “could I have time off” discussion. These trips will also see how far you can stretch your dollar because lets face it, we’re not millionaires…yet. The very first edition of this segment goes to one of my new favorite places down in Baja Mexico, K38. This place takes “ballin’ on a budget” to a WHOLE NEW LEVEL. Just a little south out of Rosarito, directly in front of the famous K38 point break is where we stayed. It is only fitting the surf hostel-like hotel is named Robert’s K38 Surf Motel.

For $60 a night we got a more than spacious bedroom equipped with a big couch, separate full bathroom and closet area. There is ping pong, a ring toss, and a communal fridge for storing beer of course. It has gated secure parking AND a wetsuit/board storage room with a rinse off shower. Basically this place is a little slice of heaven.

They have all different kinds of rooms and you can pick the number you want directly on the website. One of their best rooms is the clubhouse on the second story complete with your own private bar, patio and fridge. It sleeps up to 8 people making it the perfect option for large groups. If you disagree with the “fish are friends, not food” mentality, a short walk up the hill takes you to some of the best shrimp tacos to exist – easily able to be picked out if you prefer plants like me. Right next door is the market for when you run out of beer, only downside is they don’t sell beer until 10am so make sure you bring enough mimosas to hold you over!A quick $10 taxi ride can take you to Puerto Nuevo known for it’s cheap and delicious lobster (I had a big plate of aroz y frijoles aka rice and beans). La Casa Del Pescador gives you a little over 4 huge lobsters for $18. Make friends with the waiter and he’ll give you a few free tequila shots.

A taxi ride for the same price the other direction takes you to Rosarito. My best advice is to spend the days here but after 10pm can get a little wild, not in a good way. Stroll the streets haggling for panchos, devouring tacos and watching the sunsets while sipping on AMAZING piña coladas. Rosarito is filled with culture and fun things to do making it a great day trip! When the trip has come to an end, I suggest you leave Robert’s as early as possible to avoid border traffic. We left the hotel around 7am, it takes about 45 minutes to get to the border and the line took us about 2 hours to cross. BRING YOUR PASSPORT it makes things easier. All in all the total trip was a little under $200 per person for a 3 day trip. This included food, hotel and the numerous trinkets we bargained for. See, I told you, ballin’ on a budget. I spent it all with my favorite person on this planet so maybe that is why I loved it so much but I guarantee you will too.

Tener un buen viaje!

P.s the hotel has dogs so I probably should have started with that because it is the best part.

Disclaimer: a lot of beer was consumed in the making of this weekender trip. The plus? it was Tecate Light…don’t knock it till you try it.
